Protests erupt in Iran after Israeli airstrike embassy in Syria

People have been burning American and Israeli flags in Tehran after an Israeli airstrike hit the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syria.

The attack killed Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, who oversaw Iran’s military and intelligence operations in Syria and Lebanon, as well as his deputy, Brigadier General Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi, and a Lebanese Hezbollah member.

The attack came hours after an Iranian-backed Iraqi militia claimed credit for a drone attack that targeted an Israeli military base in the port city of Eilat.

In recent weeks Israel has also escalated its airstrikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon, signalling its growing impatience with the militant group’s cross-border attacks that have emptied out parts of northern Israel.
