Rishi Sunak has warned that giving Sir Keir Starmer the keys to No 10 would leave the country less safe.

The Prime Minister claimed Labour’s refusal to adopt the Government’s plan to spend 2.5% of gross domestic product (GDP) on defence sent the wrong message at a time when the world was facing “one of the most dangerous periods we’ve ever known”.

He told guests at Policy Exchange think tank that he believes the Conservative government will 'keep this country safe' and that Keir Starmer's 'actions demonstrate that he won't be able to do that'.

Sir Keir rejected the attack, saying “I know first-hand the importance of national security” from his role as director of public prosecutions.

Mr Sunak said: \"I believe this is the most dangerous time that we have faced for generations, that is why we have made the decision to increase defence spending 2.5% - that is not an easy decision.

\"But that is a decision we have made, it is a choice that we have made, it is a priority that we think is right for the country.

\"Keir Starmer and the Labour Party have been crystal clear that they don't believe in that. They will not match that choice, so there's no way you can keep the country safe and secure from the growing threats we face - Iran, China, North Korea, Russia acting together - unless you are prepared to invest in our defence it's as simple as that there's a very clear dividing line there.\"
