What makes a place an ideal hometown? Happy residents, plenty of job opportunities, great schools and affordable housing are often-cited factors. To determine the Best Places to Live rankings, we looked at data on the country’s 150 most populous metro areas, including the cost of living, job market, crime rates, quality of education, climate and more. New to the rankings this year are scores for weather temperateness, risk of and resilience to extreme weather, and price parity, or how the cost of goods and services compare across metro areas. The data is weighted based on the factors people consider most important, as determined by a survey of more than multiple thousands of people throughout the U.S. asking what matters most to them when picking their next places to live.
