Sweden is in the grip of a rise in gang violence that has shocked society and turned the country, with a reputation as a safe and peaceful nation, into a homicide hotspot.

About 62,000 people are active in, or have connections to, criminal networks in the country, police say, and its gun crime death rate is now the highest in the European Union.
