In July 2020, Natalie Elphicke visited the parliamentary office of Robert Buckland, the lord chancellor and justice secretary, on the eve of her husband's trial for sex offences and despite claiming she only wanted to discuss general justice system concerns, she quickly turned the conversation to her husband's case.

Elphicke, who succeeded her husband as MP for Dover, lobbied Buckland to intervene in the trial, allegedly showed discontent with the trial's timing and the presiding judge. Some present interpreted her remarks as an attempt to move the trial to a less public venue or replace the judge. Her demeanor suggested she expected special treatment and wanted Buckland to prevent her husband from facing public scrutiny.

Alex Phillips discusses the reasons for the former Tory MP's defection to Labour with the chief political correspondent at The Independent, John Rentoul and political commentator at The Spectator, James Heale.
